Type Locality and Naming
The Assedjefar Formation was defined in 1952 by Lelubre in the HAMADAT Tanghirt area of west Libya (Hallett, 2002).

Lithology and Thickness
Collomb (1962) has described a 190m thick succession with variable facies from east to west in the type area. In the east the Assedjefar Formation consists of about 100m of fine to coarse-grained, cross-bedded sandstones containing fossil wood with two thin beds of sandy and silty claystone, followed by a sequence of marly carbonates. In the west, the facies changes to more or less equal proportions of sandstones and claystones, followed by marls and a few interbeds of carbonates. Near the base some oolitic dolomite banks, and fossiliferous sandstones with fossil wood are also present (Mamgian, 1980).

Lower contact
It conformably overlies the Marar Fm.
Upper contact
It is conformably overlain by the Dembaba Fm.

It is present in the Murzuq and Ghadames Basins.
